Result: Serena Williams reaches third round in Miami

Serena Williams defeats Yaroslava Shvedova in straight sets to reach the third round of the Miami Masters.

Serena Williams has booked her place in the third round of the Miami Masters with a 7-6 6-2 win over Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan.

The American survived an early scare in the first set, saving three set points to take the opener to a tie-break, which she edged 9-7.

Williams, the defending champion, settled into her stride in the second set, clinching it by a more convincing 6-2 to wrap up the match in one hour and 46 minutes.

The world number one will take on Caroline Garcia of France in the next round.
