World number two Rafael Nadal has come back from the brink of defeat to record a three-set victory over Fabio Fognini at the China Open.

The world number 19 wowed the Beijing crowd with a stunning display of attacking tennis to move two games away from a famous triumph, before Nadal stormed back to take the match 2-6 6-4 6-1.

The Italian player dominated the serve of his more illustrious opponent, and showed no nerves in taking the opening set for the loss of just two games.

The Fognini onslaught continued in the second with some miraculous play, with Nadal having to save break points to remain in contention, but the Italian capitulated from 4-2 and 30-0 up, to lose four games in a row.

Nadal, who is bidding to regain his place at the top of the ATP rankings, secured the early break at the start of the decider and that was enough to break Fognini's heart, and the Spaniard soon secured his passage into the semi-finals.
