Roger Federer books his place in the quarter-finals of the Rome Masters with a 6-2 5-7 6-1 victory over Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Roger Federer defeated former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-2 5-7 6-1 this evening to secure his place in the quarter-finals of the Rome Masters.

The world number two enjoyed a dominant first set, holding his serve throughout. Ferrero briefly fought back for 2-2, but Federer took the next four games.

It was Ferrero's time to shine in the second set, matching the Swiss game-for-game before catching him out with a stunning backhand winner in the 11th.

The Spaniard held his serve to take the set, but it was Federer who raised his game in the decider.

Ferrero managed to win just one game of the third set as Federer's backhand dominated proceedings, helping him to record a stylish victory.

Federer will take on Andreas Seppi in the quarter-final.
