Kei Nishikori comes through rain-affected French Open first round

Kei Nishikori comes through his rain-delayed first-round match against Simone Bolelli in straight sets at the French Open.

Kei Nishikori has managed to earn a spot in the second round of the French Open after being forced to finish his first-round match one day after he began it in Paris.

The world number six drove to a two-set lead over Simone Bolelli on Sunday, but after rain descended onto the clay courts in Paris, the pair were forced to conclude their match on Monday afternoon.

Nishikori, whose best finish at the Grand Slam is the quarter-finals, wrapped up the third set in 43 minutes to claim a 6-1 7-5 6-3 victory over Bolelli.

Yesterday, the Japanese player eased to a one-set lead by breaking his opponent three times, but in the second set, Bolelli managed to convert his first break point of the match.

It was evenly poised at 4-4, but Nishikori managed to double his lead by clinching set point with a break of serve.

The third set went by the way of serve in the first seven games, with just one break point created by Bolelli, but the Italian failed to convert.

Nishikori then broke to extend his lead and complete the match.
