Angelique Kerber overcomes Flavia Pennetta in three sets to set up a last-16 clash with Petra Martic.

Angelique Kerber survived an early scare before overcoming the challenge of Flavia Pennetta and booking her place in the last 16 at the French Open this evening.

The 10th seed looked rusty early on, producing 14 unforced errors, and Pennetta capitalised by claiming a solitary break to take the opening set.

Kerber improved dramatically and broke four times to seal a 4-6 6-3 6-2 victory in just under two hours.

Petra Martic, who has beaten Kerber in the pair's previous two meetings, awaits the German in round four.
