Ben Proud breaks British 50m record

Ben Proud breaks a 14-year-old British record, clocking a time of 20.74s in the men's 50m freestyle at the ASA winter meet.

Ben Proud has broken a long-standing British record in the 50m freestyle at the ASA winter meet in Sheffield.

The 21-year-old clocked a time of 20.74s in the final of the event on Thursday night, beating the time set by Mark Foster 14 years ago.

"I'm really pleased," Proud told swimming.org afterwards. "This morning I swam a 22 so I wasn't quite sure what to expect tonight but I felt really fast and I was just trying to think about getting all the detail right.

"As soon as I nailed my turn, I knew it was going to be a fast swim but I didn't think it would be sub 21 seconds."

Elsewhere, 16-year-old Imogen Clark also broke a British record, swimming the 50m breaststroke in 30.02s.
