China's Xu Lijia wins gold in women's laser radial

Xu Lijia wins gold for China in the women's laser radial final.

Xu Lijia has won gold for China in the women's laser radial, claiming victory in the medal race at Weymouth.

Silver went to Marit Bouwmeester of the Netherlands and bronze to Belgium's Evi van Ecker.

Xu was behind Ireland's Annalise Murphy at the first marker on the first lap but was in the lead for the remainder of the race to claim gold overall.

Great Britain's Alison Young was never in the mix for a medal, but sailed well in the final race to have a say in the final destination of the medals.

The battle was for silver and bronze in truth, although there was a chance to catch Xu, and Murphy was in a real tussle with Belgium's Van Ecker.

Van Ecker breezed past Murphy on the way to the sixth mark and was favourite for bronze into the final stretch.

Bouwmeester held on to silver by finishing second and was followed over the line by Van Ecker, which meant heartbreak for Murphy, who won the competition's first four races but could only manage fourth overall.
