South African cricket has established yet another franchise tournament, this time a more professional step towards league cricket from Cricket South Africa (CSA). CSA formally announced the tournament in 2022 and announced an expected time frame of the league in early 2023. SA20 League is the 3rd league established under the management of Cricket South Africa.

This time the formula is picked up from the best franchise tournament in the world Indian Premier League (IPL). Hence, there is a strong chance that it will bring success. Betway is the main sponsor of the SA20 League.

The tournament will start on January 10, 2023, and the final is scheduled on February 11, 2023.

Betway and SA Cricket

Betway has sponsored many sporting organizations and teams, not solely cricket focused, including the National Hockey League, football club Atletico Madrid and now, the South African Twenty20 Cricket League.

According to Andrew Stone of bestnewzealandcasinos.com, "Betway have come to the party in a big way by sponsoring the SA20 League and bringing world-class cricket to South Africa. It's a significant investment in South African cricket and one that we are thrilled to see."

This collaboration demonstrates online gambling's increasing popularity and its potential to drive economic growth in South Africa. Betway's sponsorship portfolio also includes deals with Cricket South Africa and Cricket West Indies, demonstrating the company's commitment to the sport and desire to be the market leader in online betting.

The first league that CSA announced was T20 Global League in 2017. The announcement garnered praise from local players and cricket fans but could not get attraction from sponsors and media partners. CSA could not finalize a deal resulting in a postponement of the cricket league in 2017. The league was repackaged with the name Mzansi Super League in June 2018. In the first tournament, Cricket South Africa owned, six teams participated. MSL did not find much attraction and lasted only two seasons. The 2020 and 2021 seasons were cancelled because of Covid-19 Pandemic.

South Africa announced Betway SA20 League in 2022 under a newly established entity African Cricket Development (Pty) Limited (ACD). Cricket South Africa has the major share in its ownership with 50% of the total share. The broadcaster Supersport is the 2nd biggest owner with a 30 percent share. A former Indian Premier League COO, Sundar Raman, is the 3rd owner with the remaining 20% shares. The inclusion of Raman brings quite a guarantee to SA20 League.

The success of the IPL provides a warranty that the Betway SA20 league will also become one of the best.

Pattern of the SA20 League

Betway, the SA20 cricket league's title sponsor, is among the world's leading online betting and gaming operators. They deliver premium online betting services – any list of casinos is bound to have Betway appearing on it.

Betway SA20 league will be played in a pattern of every other major league of the world. The first round will have Round Robin matches in which every team will play twice against other
teams. After this, the top 4 teams will qualify for the playoffs, where one team will surely be crowned as the champion. Teams are selected through an auction rather than a draught, thereby making it the second cricket tournament in the world to do so after the Indian Premier League.

Every franchise will have a squad of 17 players, with the option of signing up to five players before the auction, three international players, one South African international player, and one uncapped South African player.

Franchise Names and Owners
