Italian sprinter Marcell Jacobs claims gold in the prestigious men's 100m race at the Tokyo Olympics.

Marcell Jacobs has claimed a first ever gold for Italy in the prestigious men's 100m race at the Tokyo Olympics.

Italy had never even had a competitor in the final of the event prior to today, with 26-year-old Jacobs coming off the back of a strong season on the circuit to top the podium.

Jacobs ran a personal best of 9.80 seconds for his gold and finished 0.04 seconds ahead of American Fred Kerley - a 400m specialist - who took the silver.

In what was considered to be an open race - the first without the legendary Usain Bolt since 2004 - all six of the finishing competitors ran a time of sub-10 seconds.

The bronze went the way of Canada's Andre De Grasse, whose time of 9.89 seconds put him ahead of the likes of China's Su Bingtian and the USA's Ronnie Baker.

The race brought disappointment for Team GB, meanwhile, as Zharnel Hughes was disqualified for inexplicably going early.
