Zach Johnson leads The Open after day one, with the likes of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson not too far behind.

American Zach Johnson leads The Open after round one at Muirfield.

Johnson finished on five-under after a strong front nine, which included three birdies and and eagle.

He also birdied 12 before the only blemish on his round, a bogey at 14.

The likes of Mark O'Meara and Tom Lehman proved that age is no barrier with a four-under and three-under respectively, while the usual suspects of Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods are a shot further back on two-under par.

India's Shiv Kapur did lead the tournament for a short while after six birdies in his opening seven holes. The back nine proved much tougher though as he double-bogeyed 10 and bogeyed 14 to finish two off the lead.

The highest-placed Britons are Oliver Fisher and Martin Laird on one-under, while Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood are both one-over par after round one.
