Wolves release a statement saying that they "welcome" the FA's decision to ban Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey for five games following an allegation of racial abuse.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have said that they "welcome" the decision to ban Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey following an allegation of abusive language towards Romain Saiss.

Shelvey has been hit with a five-match suspension and £100,000 fine by the FA after being found guilty of using racially-aggravated language during the Championship clash between the two sides on September 17.

The 24-year-old has seven days to appeal the ban, and Newcastle have confirmed that they will wait for written reasons behind the FA's decision before they decide whether to contest it.

A statement on Wolves' official website read: "Wolves welcome the verdict following the FA's investigation into an allegation of abusive and/or insulting words towards one of the club's players in the fixture at Newcastle United in September."

If the ban stands then Shelvey will be sidelined until mid-January, missing a crucial stage of Newcastle's bid for an immediate return to the Premier League.
