Vancouver Whitecaps stop rot with San Jose Earthquakes scalp

Vancouver Whitecaps beat San Jose Earthquakes 3-1 in Canada.

Vancouver Whitecaps ended a three-match winless streak in the MLS by thumping San Jose Earthquakes 3-1 in Canada this morning.

The game was only five minutes old when the Whitecaps moved ahead, as Mauro Rosales let rip from the edge of the box to leave goalkeeper David Bingham with no chance.

It was almost two three minutes later, as Octavio Rivero cleverly flicked the ball over the head of Bingham, but his finish was lacking.

Nevertheless, the Canadian outfit continued to dominate and doubled their lead on 32 minutes through Kendall Watson.

Rosales turned provider with a teasing cross into the danger zone, as Watson rose highest to head past Bingham and give the hosts a comfortable 2-0 lead at the break.

Carl Robinson's side effectively secured the points on 56 minutes, as Rivero won and subsequently converted a penalty to open up a three-goal advantage.

Shea Salinas almost threw San Jose the slimmest of lifelines when his long-range effort bounced off the crossbar on 80 minutes, as the hosts looked on course for a clean sheet.

However, Quincy Amarikwa slammed home in the dying minutes after Vancouver failed to clear their lines, but it was rendered a mere consolation by the referee's whistle shortly after.
