Michael Appleton emerges as new favourite for Sunderland job?

Leicester City assistant Michael Appleton reportedly emerges as the new favourite to replace Chris Coleman as manager of Sunderland.

Leicester City assistant Michael Appleton has reportedly emerged as the new favourite for the vacant managerial position at Sunderland.

At the weekend, Chris Coleman was removed from his role in the dugout as the club were taken over by a consortium led by Stewart Gardner, subject to Football League approval.

According to the Northern Echo, Gardner's previous links to Oxford United have led to Appleton being strongly considered for the senior role at the Black Cats with the 42-year-old having previously managed the League One outfit.

Appleton is currently playing second fiddle to Claude Puel at Premier League side Leicester, but Puel's job is allegedly under threat due to the Foxes' recent form in the top flight.

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder and Mick McCarthy - who has managed Sunderland in the past - are also said to be in the running.
