Newcastle United switch attention to Matt Phillips?

If Newcastle United are unsuccessful in their pursuit of Andros Townsend, they will reportedly focus their attention on Queens Park Rangers winger Matt Phillips.

Matt Phillips has reportedly been added to Newcastle United's shortlist of attacking transfer options should they miss out on number one target Andros Townsend.

Recent speculation has claimed that Steve McClaren is keen to sign Townsend, but the Magpies have so far been unable to agree a fee with Tottenham Hotspur.

Should the stalemate continue, Queens Park Rangers winger Phillips has been identified as a potential alternative, according to The Guardian.

The report adds that the 24-year-old may cost Newcastle around £5m, which is £9m less than Tottenham's asking price for Townsend.

It is also believed that McClaren is monitoring Scott Sinclair's situation at Aston Villa.
