Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur go into half-time all square at 1-1 in their Premier League opener this afternoon.

Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur could not be separated in the first 45 minutes of their Premier League opener this afternoon.

The Magpies had the first good chance of the match when the ball fell to Papiss Cisse, but his effort from outside the box flew inches wide of the post.

Jermain Defoe responded for Spurs, advancing into the box before unleashing an effort that rebounded back off the post.

Just four minutes later, Spurs hit the woodwork again, this time through Gareth Bale, who headed Aaron Lennon's cross against the crossbar.

Defoe and Bale's efforts remained the closest either side would get in the first half as the two Champions League contenders went into the break all square at 0-0.
