Tottenham Hotspur are beaten on penalties by Basel in their Europa League quarter-final tie in Switzerland.

Tottenham Hotspur have been beaten on penalties by Basel in their Europa League quarter-final tie in Switzerland.

A 2-2 draw on the night saw the teams end the contest 4-4 on aggregate, but it was the home side who made it through with a 4-1 victory in the shootout.

Tottenham went ahead in the 26th minute as Clint Dempsey took advantage of Aleksandar Dragovic's botched clearance to round goalkeeper Yann Sommer and slot in.

Basel got themselves level on the night three minutes later when Mohamed Salah poked past Brad Friedel having been gifted the ball by Moussa Dembele.

Tottenham's evening got worse four minutes after the restart as Dragovic tapped in the rebound following Brad Friedel's save from a corner.

The visitors pushed hard to force extra time and they did it with eight minutes to play through Dempsey's finish from substitute Tom Huddlestone's cross.

However, Spurs were reduced to 10 men in the 90th minute when Jan Vertonghen was shown a straight red card for bringing down Marco Streller as the last man.

The closest that either side came to breaking the deadlock in extra time was through Basel winger Mohamed El-Nenny, who saw his ambitious drive strike the woodwork.

Tom Huddlestone had his kick saved in the shootout before Emmanuel Adebayor blazed high and wide as Basel went through to the semi-finals.
