Sheffield Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri is facing a ban from football after being charged by the English Football League, according to a report.

Sheffield Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri is reportedly facing a ban from football after being charged by the English Football League.

The Thai businessman, the club's finance director John Redgate and their former chief executive Katrien Meire have all been hit with misconduct charges and could be banned from football if found guilty by an independent panel.

The Telegraph reports that the charges pertain to the controversial £60m sale of the club's Hillsborough ground to Chansiri.

Hillsborough's sale helped the club generate a pre-tax profit in their 2017-18 accounts but Land Registry documents later indicated that the sale did not go through until the following season, leading to the club being charged with misconduct.

It is believed that Chansiri went through with the sale to avoid breaking the EFL's new profitability and sustainability rules and that he was notified of his charges, along with those for Redgate and Meire, on November 14.

Sheffield Wednesday, who could face a points deduction if their appeal against the charge is unsuccessful, are currently ninth in the Championship table, two points off the playoff places.
