Goalless draw sees Seattle Sounders advance to Western Conference final on away goals

The Seattle Sounders book their place in the Western Conference final as a goalless draw against Dallas sees them progress on the away goals rule.

The Seattle Sounders have secured their place in the MLS Western Conference final as they drew 0-0 against Dallas to take the tie on the away goals rule.

The Sounders went into the match with the advantage having played out a 1-1 draw against Oscar Pareja's side in the first leg of their contest, as Osvaldo Alonso's strike cancelled out Michel's penalty.

Seattle nearly took the lead in the seventh minute when Clint Dempsey raided upfield and into the box, but he saw his powerful shot tipped over the bar by Chris Seitz.

The visitors hit back and were within inches of finding the net as Fabian Castillo beat two defenders down the right as he cut inside into the box, but he dragged his effort wide of the post.

Dempsey had another opportunity to break the deadlock just before the break when he and Obafemi Martins combined inside the box, but once again he was denied by a good save from Seitz.

In the second half, Dallas came out strongly and Castillo was presented with a decent chance as he latched on to Blas Perez's ball over the top of the defence. The forward tried to chip Stefan Frei, but he couldn't guide his effort on target from a tight angle.

The game was starting to become an end-to-end affair, as Dempsey found space to drill a shot at goal from outside the area. The forward's effort took a deflection off Zach Lloyd, but trickled just past the post.

Dempsey was presented with a chance to seal his side's place in the final when Matt Hedges's attempted clearance fell right into his path inside the box. However, his powerful strike was saved once again by Seitz to keep Dallas in the match.

The visitors tried one last effort to win the game in the dying seconds as they pumped the ball long into the box, but the Seattle defence held out to put their side into the final.

Seattle will face off against the Los Angeles Galaxy in the Western Conference final for a place in the MLS Cup final, starting on November 23.
