Western Sydney Wanderers' resilience comes unstuck in Melbourne City defeat

Western Sydney Wanderers fail to hold onto an early lead against Melbourne City at AAMI Park as they fall to yet another A-League defeat.

Melbourne City picked up their first ever victory against Western Sydney Wanderers by battling back from a goal behind to claim a 2-1 win at AAMI Park this morning.

Wanderers remain bottom of the A-League ladder and without a win this season following the defeat, although things got off to a positive start for them when Yojiro Takahagi opened the scoring inside just six minutes.

The debutant's free kick evaded everyone inside the box, including goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne, to see the 2014 Club World Cup finalists take an early lead.

That advantage did not last too long, however, as Jacob Melling headed home to level things up just moments after Ante Covic had kept out Damien Duff's shot, maintaining his side's record of scoring in every home game this season.

Covic had to be on guard to deny Robert Koren's effort before the interval, while Iain Ramsay also came close to adding a second for the hosts.

Melbourne continued to pile on the pressure, although it looked as though it was not going to be their day when Ramsay failed to put the ball into an empty net 20 minutes from time.

Aaron Mooy showed his teammates how to do it, however, finishing smartly beyond the reach of Covic to give his side the lead for the first time just moments after that glaring miss.

There was to be further chances to extend the lead with Koren and Mooy both coming close once more, but it mattered little in the end as the Heart laid claim to all three points.
