Manchester United will reportedly consider appointing Edwin van der Sar as their next executive vice-chairman when Ed Woodward steps down at the end of 2021.

Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar is reportedly among the contenders to succeed Ed Woodward as Manchester United's next executive vice-chairman.

United announced on Tuesday evening that Woodward is to step down from the position that he has held since 2012 at the end of the year.

The announcement came shortly before the Red Devils withdrew from the controversial European Super League, though the club insist the two matters are not linked.

The search for Woodward's successor is already under way, and the Manchester Evening News suggests that former United goalkeeper Van der Sar is among those being considered.

Van der Sar spent six years at Old Trafford in his playing days and has been part of Ajax's boardroom staff since 2012, including the last five years as CEO.

Current United director Richard Arnold and Cliff Baty, who is currently the club's chief financial officer, are also believed to be in the frame to take over from Woodward.
