Manchester United legend Gary Neville compares rumoured club transfer targets James Maddison and Jack Grealish to Eric Cantona, Matt Le Tissier and Joe Cole.

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has defended the "cocky" nature of James Maddison and Jack Grealish.

Both players have been heavily linked with summer moves to Old Trafford following impressive campaigns with Leicester City and Aston Villa respectively.

Neville was full of praise for both Englishmen, comparing their swagger to the likes of Eric Cantona, Matt Le Tissier and Joe Cole.

"We're quick to mention players like Maddison being cocky. We used to say it about players like Joe Cole and Matt Le Tissier. Eric Cantona obviously was seen as an arrogant and cocky player," Neville told Sky Sports News.

"Jack Grealish has had it as well and there's a stigma attached to some players. But actually that's why they are the players they are. They've got flair, ability, they want to look good and look the part.

"They're brilliant to watch and [Maddison] is a fantastic player and I'm sure Leicester will be working very hard to make sure they hang on to him."

United are understood to view Grealish as their number one midfield target, with Maddison seen as a more expensive backup option.
