Klopp: 'Neymar sale a warning to Barca'

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp suggests that a big-spending rival could splash out £272m to sign Lionel Messi from Barcelona.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has warned Barcelona that they risk losing Lionel Messi as his release clause is no longer "impossible" to buy out.

The Catalan giants have been rocked by the loss of key forward Neymar this month, seeing the Brazil international join Paris Saint-Germain after a £200m clause in his contract was met.

Klopp believes that the world-record transfer should act as a wake-up call, as it is now conceivable that Messi - reportedly available for £272m - could be prised away by a big-spending rival in the coming years.

"It's pretty simple. Until now it was simply seen as impossible," he told DAZN. "Then there is the list, with the release clauses for Barcelona. Leo Messi, €300m.

"In a period of just a month that suddenly sounds possible too. That used to be an outrageous amount. They just set that amount randomly. I mean, who would pay €300m? And now it simply happened."

Klopp is desperate to keep one of his own prized assets out of Barcelona's clutches, with a £90m bid for Philippe Coutinho recently being knocked back by the Reds.
