Jordan Henderson: 'I'm still proving my fitness'

England midfielder Jordan Henderson admits that he is still proving his fitness ahead of Euro 2016 having not started a match since early April.

England midfielder Jordan Henderson has admitted that he is still proving his fitness to manager Roy Hodgson ahead of the final squad selection for Euro 2016.

Henderson has not started a match since the opening week of April due to a knee injury, but did get minutes under his belt with substitute appearances in Liverpool's final league game of the season and England's friendly against Turkey on Sunday.

The 25-year-old is expected to be in the starting lineup for Friday's warm-up match against Australia, and despite his lack of match fitness he insists that he is feeling good.

"I am still proving [my fitness]. I still feel as though this week I trained well and I feel good," the Liverpool captain told reporters.

"Getting some minutes at the weekend was a bonus for me really so I am hoping that can put us in good stead for the game tomorrow and hopefully get more minutes, get my match sharpness back, if you like, and hopefully keep progressing.

"Come the first game of the Euros, hopefully I am on that plane and ready to go."

Friday's match at the Stadium of Light is England's last before Hodgson must name his final 23-man squad to travel to France.
