5 memorable England away wins

Gareth Southgate's men inflicted a rare defeat on Spain with a 3-2 win in Seville on Monday night.

England beat Spain 3-2 in Seville on Monday night for a famous away win.

Here, Press Association Sport looks at five other memorable successes on the road, outside of tournaments.

3-2 v Germany, Berlin, March 26, 2016 (friendly)

Eric Dier

It may have been just a friendly, but a youthful England side took the significant scalp of the World Cup winners. Eric Dier's stoppage-time header capped a stunning 3-2 comeback win. Harry Kane's exceptional strike and an even better Jamie Vardy flick had cancelled out a 2-0 deficit following goals from Toni Kroos and Mario Gomez either side of half-time.

4-1 v Croatia, Zagreb, September 10, 2008, World Cup qualifier

Theo Walcott

Theo Walcott justified England coach Fabio Capello's decision to keep faith in him – and jettison David Beckham – with a hat-trick. The 19-year-old's goals were accompanied by one for Wayne Rooney as England inflicted a first competitive home loss on Croatia at the start of the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign.

5-1 v Germany, Munich, September 1, 2001 (World Cup qualifier)

England trailed after just six minutes to Carsten Jancker's goal, but rallied as Michael Owen scored a hat-trick and his Liverpool team-mates Steven Gerrard and Emile Heskey also netted. Sven-Goran Eriksson's men tore Germany apart to ignite belief that England's 'Golden Generation' could deliver a long overdue tournament success.

4-2 v Spain, Madrid, February 18, 1987 (friendly)

Both Spain and England had been beaten by eventual champions Argentina at the previous year's World Cup and both were on form for this friendly. Real Madrid's Emilio Butragueno put the hosts in front at the Bernabeu, but Barcelona striker Gary Lineker responded with four goals of his own. Ramon Vazquez scored what proved to be little more than a consolation.

2-0 v Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, June 10, 1984 (friendly)

John Barnes
John Barnes helped England to a famous win over Brazil with brilliant solo goal at the Maracana (PA)

John Barnes dazzled Brazil with a stunning strike in a fitting location, the Maracana Stadium. Barnes collected the ball on the left touchline and evaded a host of would-be tacklers before rounding the goalkeeper to tap in. Mark Hateley was also on target with a header. Hateley earned a move from Second Division Portsmouth to AC Milan, joining England team-mate Ray Wilkins, within days of his strike.
