Football Association chief Alex Horne denies that the governing body have made John Terry's position with England "untenable" following the defender's retirement from international football.

Football Association chief Alex Horne believes that the governing body have not made John Terry's position with the England team "untenable".

The 31-year-old announced his retirement from international football yesterday, claiming that he had no choice after the FA charged the defender with improper conduct after allegedly racially abusing Anton Ferdinand during a Premier League match against Queens Park Rangers last October.

"We respect his decision," Horne told Sky Sports News. "It shouldn't be taking a year to resolve but we are reaching a conclusion on this process.

"It's disappointing and it limits Roy [Hodgson's] choices. I don't see how we have made it untenable. I could separate the two [cases] in my mind, unfortunately it seems that he couldn't."

Terry is due to face an independent hearing regarding his charge at Wembley today.
