Burnley boss Sean Dyche "really pleased" with away draw

Burnley manager Sean Dyche hails the attitude shown by his players to grind out a goalless draw against Istanbul Basaksehir in the first leg of their Europa League tie.

Sean Dyche has declared himself "really pleased" with Burnley's 0-0 draw away to Istanbul Basaksehir in the first leg of their Europa League third qualifying round tie.

The Clarets, showing six changes to the side that overcame Aberdeen a week earlier, held on for a stalemate despite being second best at the Fatih Terim Stadium.

Burnley saw just 38% of the ball in the first half, but Dyche was ultimately happy to come away from Turkey with it all still to play for ahead of next week's return leg at Turf Moor.

"I think overall, one of the more pleasing things is we had to bolt together a team and come somewhere like this where we've never been before and find a way of getting a result," he told reporters.

"You know, it's tough coming to a place like this, it's new to these lads, and we've come with 17 players - that's our lot. So I'm really pleased, certainly with the shape and attitude, on a heavy, leg-sapping, old-fashioned pitch."

Asked about his side's lack of time on the ball, Dyche replied: "It's normal for us away in the Premier League, we often don't dominate the ball, especially away.

"Most clubs don't statistically dominate the ball away from home in the Premier League, so the basics, the shape, the energy, the will, is very important. We've had 10 years of everyone saying possession wins - it doesn't, as the World Cup showed. It's less relevant now."

Thursday's match was Burnley's first competitive continental outing away from home in 51 years, having been drawn against Scotland's Aberdeen in the previous round.
