Shinji Kagawa has scored on his return to help Borussia Dortmund to a 2-0 lead over Freiburg.
Roman Burki was forced into action early on to keep it goalless when Kevin Grosskreutz found space just inside the box before testing the Freiburg goalkeeper with a powerful strike.
Kagawa, making his first start for Dortmund since returning to the club from Manchester United, was heavily involved throughout the first half, but was often left disappointed in the final third of the pitch.
The deadlock was broken in the 34th minute when Adrian Ramos brought the game to life by linking well with Grosskreutz, before drilling into the roof of the net from just inside the box.
Dortmund's lead should have been doubled when the influential Grosskreutz got forward again, but his low effort flew wide of the post.
Ramos turned into the provider as his inch-perfect pass found Kagawa, who calmly slotted home to make it 2-0.
