Valencia, Bayern Munich through to last 16

Valencia and Bayern Munich progress to the knockout rounds of the Champions League with a 1-1 draw in Spain.

Valencia and Bayern Munich have progressed to the Champions League last 16 with a 1-1 draw in their Group F clash at Mestalla.

The Spanish side could have made the breakthrough as early as the second minute had Holger Badstuber not recovered quickly from his slip to dispossess Roberto Soldado in a dangerous position.

Four minutes later Franck Ribery's cross into the Valencia box aimed at Claudio Pizarro was crucially intercepted by goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.

Valencia thought that they had scored in the 13th minute when Ricardo Costa volleyed home past Manuel Neuer, but his effort was ruled out because of a foul committed by Adil Rami on Badstuber.

Four minutes later Costa saved Los Che from going behind when he intercepted a Ribery chip aimed for Philipp Lahm.

Then just after the half-hour mark Valencia had a good chance to go ahead thanks to Soldado's tricks, but Neuer parried Sofiane Feghouli's final shot.

A minute later the hosts were reduced to 10 men when Antonio Barragan was sent off for a reckless challenge on David Alaba.

Bayern almost took advantage of their numerical superiority in the 37th minute when Thomas Muller shot on goal from 25 yards, but Guaita made a good save.

However, it was Valencia who ended the first half the stronger of the two sides, with Feghouli's curling shot going just over the Bayern crossbar.

Feghouli and Soldado combined with each other again eight minutes after the restart when the former whipped in a good cross, but Neuer kept out the Spanish striker's effort.

Bayern went close on a couple of occasions thereafter, before Aly Cissokho headed wide for the home side and Soldado shot over the crossbar with only Neuer to beat.

Moments later Ribery set up Muller with a reverse pass, but the Germany international saw his attempt saved by Guaita.

Then in the 70th minute Xherdan Shaqiri sent in a cross that Mario Mandzukic headed wide from close range.

Seven minutes later Feghouli punished Bayern for that miss when he got past two defenders and shot at goal that was deflected off Dante and past Neuer into the German club's goal.

However, Muller equalised for the Bavarian giants with eight minutes of normal time remaining when he turned in Mario Gomez's flick-on from inside the area.
