Ajax director of football Marc Overmars reveals that he has not been in contact with former club Arsenal over a move for Andre Onana.

Ajax chief Marc Overmars has revealed that his former club Arsenal are yet to make contact over a deal for Andre Onana.

With uncertainty lingering over the futures of Alex Runarsson and Bernd Leno in North London, the Gunners are thought to have identified Onana as an ideal signing in between the sticks.

The 25-year-old continues to serve a lengthy doping ban and will not be able to take to the field again until November, but Lyon are thought to have moved ahead of Arsenal in the race for Onana's services.

Now, Overmars - a 1997-98 double winner with Arsenal - has provided an update on the situation, telling Voetbal International: "Not sure if we'll get to a deal with Lyon, there hasn't been contact for a week.

"Another club was also interested but already got another goalkeeper. Arsenal was also mentioned but I haven't had any contact with them."

Onana is currently due to become a free agent in the summer of 2022, and he boasts 83 clean sheets from 204 appearances across all competitions in an Ajax jersey.

Arsenal are rumoured to now be prioritising a deal for Sheffield United's Aaron Ramsdale, but the Blades are supposedly holding out for a fee of £32m for the Englishman, despite their relegation to the Championship.
