Ukraine beats Germany to win fencing gold

Yana Shemyakina wins a shock fencing gold for Ukraine, beating Germany in the women's individual Epee competition.

Ukrainian fencer Yana Shemyakina claimed a shock gold medal in the women's individual epee.

Shemyakina, ranked number 11 in the world, beat reigning Olympic champion Britta Heidmann in a sudden death period to complete a dramatic victory.

Heidmann made a slow start against the Ukrainian and was forced to come back from an early deficit to level in third period.

The match was still level at 8-8 at the finish and was forced into extra time.

Shemyakina forced her more experienced opponent into a mistake and claimed the gold medal for Ukraine.

The 22-year-old ended a dramatic day of fencing on a high note after a disputed semi-final result involving silver medalist Heidmann and Korean fencer Lam Shin.
