John Cleese has revealed that his new version of Fawlty Towers will be set in a "small bijou hotel" on an island in the Caribbean.

Last week the 83-year-old comedian announced plans to make a follow-up to the much-loved comedy, some 44 years after the final episode of the original series aired.

Cleese's character Basil Fawlty haphazardly ran a seaside hotel in Torquay in the original series, but now Basil and his daughter - to be played by Cleese's real-life daughter Camilla Cleese - will relocate to sunnier climes half way around the world.

"If you put it in the Caribbean, it becomes very multi-racial," he explained to GB News. "People in the hotel business come from everywhere, so you can bring lots of different people together.

"The characteristic of Fawlty Towers was the pressure cooker atmosphere created in the hotel."

The project has yet to have a confirmed broadcaster, although Cleese has ruled out selling the show to the BBC.
