Betty White dies on New Year's Eve, just several weeks short of her 100th birthday.

Hollywood legend Betty White has died on New Year's Eve, just several weeks short of her 100th birthday.

The comedian and actress had a career spanning back to the 1930s and became a beloved figure to successive generations with shows such as Life With Elizabeth, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Golden Girls and Hot In Cleveland.

Earlier this month White revealed that she was "in such good health" and looking forward to her milestone century on January 17, but according to TMZ, she passed away at home in California before 9.30am this morning.

Confirming the news, her agent Jeff Witjas told People: "Even though Betty was about to be 100, I thought she would live forever.

"I will miss her terribly and so will the animal world that she loved so much.

"I don't think Betty ever feared passing because she always wanted to be with her most beloved husband Allen Ludden. She believed she would be with him again."

White was known for her mischievous sense of humour, particularly in regards to ageing, and once joked: "People have told me 'Betty, Facebook is a great way to keep in touch with old friends.' At my age, if I wanted to keep in touch with old friends. I'd need an Ouija board."
