Former EastEnders and Doctors actor Sean Gleeson is named as the new series producer on Holby City.

Sean Gleeson has been appointed as the new series producer on Holby City.

The 55-year-old is a former actor, having starred in EastEnders as Conor Flaherty - Pauline Fowler's Irish nephew - in the late '90s, as well as a six-year stint on Doctors as Ronnie Woodson until 2009.

Since then Gleeson has been working behind the cameras and has served as a director and producer on Holby's sister show Casualty.

"This is obviously an exciting opportunity," said Gleeson. "I'm really looking forward to getting stuck in and working with the crews, cast and whole Holby family on consolidating and reinvigorating this firm favourite for an even wider audience."

Kate Oates, the BBC's head of continuing drama, added: "We are delighted to welcome Sean Gleeson as Series Producer of Holby City.

"After two years as a producer on Holby's sister show Casualty, Sean brings with him a great love of medical drama, and an expertise of the much-loved BBC brands.

"A director and actor, as well as a producer, Sean has a unique and holistic approach to creativity and storytelling, that makes him a great company leader, and an exceptional dramatist."

Holby City continues Tuesday nights on BBC One.
