Over 13 million tune in for Strictly Come Dancing final

The final of Strictly Come Dancing peaks with over 13 million viewers on BBC One.

A peak of 13.2 million viewers tuned in to watch Bill Bailey and Oti Mabuse crowned 2020 champions of Strictly Come Dancing last night, according to overnight ratings figures.

The 55-year-old comedian became the oldest ever contestant to win the show, which has been credited for providing much-needed escapism for viewers in the year of coronavirus.

Overall, an average of 11.6 million viewers - a 53.3% share of the TV audience - tuned in between 6pm and 8.20pm, although that figure is expected to rise notably once catch-up viewing is included in the coming weeks.

Kate Phillips, acting controller of BBC One, said: "Strictly has provided much-needed sparkle to our weekends this Autumn and last night's final brought pure joy to over 13 million viewers all over the UK as Bill and Oti lifted the glitterball."

Due to COVID-19, the BBC has been unable to film a traditional Christmas Strictly special this year - although in its place, a countdown of the show's most memorable dances ever will air on Christmas Day at 4.45pm on BBC One.
