Strictly Come Dancing's former head judge Len Goodman dies, aged 78.

Strictly Come Dancing's former head judge Len Goodman has died at the age of 78, his agent has announced.

The dance expert was a key part of Strictly from its launch in 2004 until 2016, when he left the show to avoid having to continue making weekly transatlantic flights to fulfil a judging role on the US version, Dancing With The Stars.

Goodman became beloved to American audiences through Dancing With The Stars, serving as head judge from 2005 until the most recent season, during which he announced his retirement in order to spend more time with his family.

Speaking today, his agent Jackie Gill confirmed that he died at a hospice on Saturday night following a battle with bone cancer.

A statement read: "It is with great sadness to announce that Len Goodman has passed away peacefully, aged 78.

"A much loved husband, father and grandfather who will be sorely missed by family, friends and all who knew him."

BBC director-general Tim Davie said: "Len Goodman was a wonderful, warm entertainer who was adored by millions. He appealed to all ages and felt like a member of everyone's family. Len was at the very heart of Strictly's success. He will be hugely missed by the public and his many friends and family."

Goodman had previously overcome prostate cancer in 2009, while in 2020 he had surgery for a facial melanoma.

He is survived by son James, daughter-in-law Sophie and grandchildren Alice and Dan.
