Former US President Jimmy Carter chooses to end "additional medical intervention" and will spend his final days with family at home.

Jimmy Carter, the oldest living former President in US history, is to receive hospice care at his home in Georgia.

The 98-year-old served as President for the Democrats between 1977 and 1981, famously forging the Camp David agreement between Egypt and Israel during his time in office, but he was defeated in his re-election bid by Ronald Reagan.

In a statement issued on Saturday, his foundation the Carter Center said that he had chosen to end "additional medical intervention" and will see out his remaining days at home with family, including his wife of 76 years Rosalynn Carter, 95.

Details of Carter's ailments are not known although he has previously suffered from brain and liver cancer, which he overcame.

The statement said: "After a series of short hospital stays, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter today decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention.

"He has the full support of his family and his medical team.

"The Carter family asks for privacy during this time and is grateful for the concern shown by his many admirers."

Together the Carters have four children, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
