BBC Two to tell "definitive story" of Premier League's inception

A new BBC Two documentary series will aim to tell the inside story of the formation of the Premier League in the 1990s.

BBC Two has announced a new documentary, The Premiership: A Whole New Ball Game, which will aim to tell "the definitive story" of the birth of the Premier League in the 1990s.

The four-part series will reveal how the reinvention of top-flight football came about through interviews with players, agents, journalists and the business brains that made it happen.

Announcing the show, BBC Two controller Patrick Holland said: "We'll dive into the business and the personalities behind one of the biggest cultural revolutions in modern sport, telling the story of the Premier League as a premium documentary box set."

The channel has also ordered Idris Elba's Fight School, a four-parter that will see the acclaimed actor set up an experimental fight school in London with the aim of keeping seven young adults away from street crime and gang culture.

Meanwhile, two-part documentary 21st Century Women will be an exploration of the key issues affecting women in 2020, fronted by Kirsty Wark.
