BBC announces The A Word spinoff Ralph and Katie

The BBC commissions Ralph and Katie, a spinoff series featuring two of The A Word's most popular characters.

The BBC has announced the commission of Ralph and Katie, a spinoff from the acclaimed series The A Word.

The six-part show will follow popular couple Ralph and Katie (Leon Harrop and Sarah Gordy) as they navigate the first year of married life and the struggles they encounter living with Down's Syndrome.

The series will be penned by Peter Bowker alongside a team of "new and emerging disabled writers".

"Ralph And Katie is a natural step forwards from the ongoing ambition of The A Word to increase representation and diversity both on and off screen," said Bowker.

"Equally exciting is the opportunity to work again with two young actors as talented as Leon and Sarah. It is a tribute to their performances in The A Word that the BBC have commissioned this series."

The show is expected to air early next year.
