Will Smith confirms that he has resigned from the Academy following his shocking assault of Chris Rock last week.

Will Smith has announced that he has resigned from the Academy following his shocking behaviour at the Oscars last week.

The actor left the room - and the watching world - stunned when he took to the stage and slapped Chris Rock after the comedian made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

The Academy is investigating the incident, which would have likely resulted in Smith's expulsion, but he has now pre-empted that decision by resigning.

In a statement, he said: "The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home.

"I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken.

"I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film."

In response, the Academy said that it "accepted" Smith's resignation from the organisation, which has around 10,000 members, and will meet to discuss further possible sanctions on April 18.
