Avatar director James Cameron says that critics of the sequel's runtime should stop "whining".

James Cameron has hit out at critics of the runtime of his upcoming Avatar sequel, urging them to stop "whining".

Some 13 years after the release of the original movie, the first of four sequels - Avatar: The Way of Water - will be out in cinemas this Christmas, with returning cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver being joined by Kate Winslet and Vin Diesel.

A production update in Empire magazine reveals the film's runtime to be "around three hours", eclipsing the first film's relatively meagre 2 hours 42 minutes.

"I don't want anybody whining about length when they sit and binge-watch [TV] for eight hours," Cameron told the magazine.

"I can almost write this part of the review - 'The agonisingly long three-hour movie...' It's like, give me a fucking break. I've watched my kids sit and do five one-hour episodes in a row.

"Here's the big social paradigm shift that has to happen: it's okay to get up and go pee."

Avatar: The Way of Water is due for worldwide release on December 16.
