Ghostbusters and Twins director Ivan Reitman dies in his sleep at the age of 75.

Legendary film director Ivan Reitman has died suddenly in California at the age of 75.

The Czechoslovakia-born Canadian filmmaker was known for classic films such as the original Ghostbusters, Kindergarten Cop and Twins in a career stretching back almost 50 years.

In a joint statement, Reitman's children said: "Our family is grieving the unexpected loss of a husband, father, and grandfather who taught us to always seek the magic in life.

"We take comfort that his work as a filmmaker brought laughter and happiness to countless others around the world. While we mourn privately, we hope those who knew him through his films will remember him always."

Reitman is survived by wife Geneviève and children Jason, Catherine and Caroline.
