Fast & Furious main franchise to end after 11th movie

Universal confirms that the main Fast & Furious film franchise will come to an end after the 11th movie.

Universal has confirmed that the main Fast & Furious film franchise will run for two more movies, ending with the 11th of the saga.

The car-based, high-octane films have pulled in an accumulated total of almost $6 billion (£4.57 billion) at the worldwide box office since the release of the original in 2001, making it one of the most popular franchises of all time.

A ninth movie, F9, was filmed last year but will not be released until May 2021 due to coronavirus, and in an announcement this week Universal confirmed that it has given the go-ahead to two more sequels.

The studio went on to reveal that Justin Lin, who has directed five of the nine films to date, is on board to oversee the final two instalments - likely to be released in 2023 and 2025 respectively.

With the end of the main franchise in sight, multiple spinoffs are in development - the first of which, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw - was released last year.
