Kate Garraway's husband 'becomes UK's longest-suffering coronavirus patient'

Kate Garraway's husband Derek Draper has reportedly spent more time in intensive care due to coronavirus than any other patient in the UK.

Kate Garraway's husband Derek Draper has reportedly now been in hospital with coronavirus longer than anyone else in the UK.

The Good Morning Britain host's husband was admitted to hospital with COVID-19 on March 28 and placed into an induced coma shortly afterwards.

Doctors started bringing him out of his coma in July but he remains in a minimum state of consciousness and has yet to say a word since.

The 52-year-old has now spent 184 days in intensive care which is a UK record for the effects of coronavirus, according to The Sun.

"Kate has been so brave and her strength is awe-inspiring," a source told the newspaper.

"But the truth is that progress is very, very slow. Derek has now been hospitalised for six months which makes him one of only a handful of people who have been in hospital for this long.

"It's incredibly tough for Kate though because some days he shows signs of improvement, and then 24 hours later he has taken a worrying turn for the worse.

"It's literally one step forward, two steps back.

"She can't believe Derek has been in hospital for this long, but she is so grateful that he is still here, and that gives her hope when so many have lost their lives in this pandemic."

Around a quarter of the UK population are now back in lockdown as the number of coronavirus cases continues to accelerate heading into the winter months.
