Jonathan Groff joins Doctor Who cast

Glee star Jonathan Groff joins the new series of Doctor Who in a "mysterious and exciting" role.

Jonathan Groff has become the latest name confirmed for the new season of Doctor Who.

The 38-year-old is a star of stage and screen, appearing in Glee, The Matrix Resurrections and the Frozen films, also earning plaudits for his role as King George III in Hamilton on Broadway.

Details of Groff's role in the next full season of Doctor Who, which will see Ncuti Gatwa take over as The Doctor, have yet to be confirmed, although a press release described it as a "mysterious and exciting" guest part.

"This is an incredible coup, and a great honour, to get such a huge star striding on to our set," said showrunner Russell T Davies. "So strap on your space boots, this is going to be a blast!"

Groff added: "I am so thrilled to jump into the extraordinary mind of Russell T Davies and watch the incredible Ncuti Gatwa soar in this iconic role!"

Other actors confirmed for the new season include Millie Gibson as new companion Ruby Sunday; Jemma Redgrave, returning as Kate Stewart; EastEnders legend Anita Dobson and RuPaul's Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon.

Prior to the new season airing in early 2024, Doctor Who will return this November for three 60th anniversary specials with David Tennant and Catherine Tate, followed at Christmas by Gatwa's first full-length episode.
