BBC drama head Piers Wenger says that reappointing Russell T Davies as Doctor Who showrunner was a no-brainer.

BBC drama head Piers Wenger has said that the move to bring back Russell T Davies as showrunner of Doctor Who was a no-brainer.

The Welshman revived the show for the BBC in 2005, departing five years later, but will be back at the helm for a second stint after Chris Chibnall leaves towards the end of next year.

Jodie Whittaker will be stepping down as The Doctor at the same time as Chibnall's departure and Wenger is backing Davies to "evolve" the show with a new Doctor.

Speaking at a press event on Monday, Wenger said: "I think bringing back Russell for Doctor Who was one of the least painful decisions I've ever had to make.

"How will he evolve that show? I mean, he is a man with a vision, for sure. But, you know, we are way off filming.

"We've got a new series starting at the end of the month, and a whole year of Jodie to go yet. And lots of adventures ahead for her.

"And so I think it's just a bit early to say what his vision will be, but it was a very exciting opportunity for the BBC to bring him back."

The new six-part series of Doctor Who starts on BBC One on Sunday, October 31.
