Former GB News programming head John McAndrew is appointed the BBC's new director of news programmes.

John McAndrew, former director of programming at GB News, has been appointed as the BBC's new director of news programmes.

The exec started his career in the BBC's political department, where he launched BBC Two's The Daily Politics, after which he spent a decade at Sky News before spearheading the launch of GB News in June 2021.

Talking about the new role, he said: "It's an enormous privilege to be returning to BBC News and putting my experience to good use at the world's most brilliant, creative, and trusted broadcaster, at a time when trust, truth and transparency are at an absolute premium."

Deborah Turness, CEO of BBC News, added: "John is a hugely creative talent, with excellent editorial judgement.

"He's a leading programme innovator who has a deep understanding of how to connect with audiences, and will ensure they get the value they deserve from BBC News. It's wonderful to welcome him back to the BBC."

McAndrew starts in the role in the new year.
