Mark Cavendish wins 28th Tour de France stage

Mark Cavendish edges out Andre Greipel to secure his 28th Tour de France stage win.

Mark Cavendish has won his 28th Tour de France stage after edging out Andre Greipel at the finish line.

Both riders ended the 223.5km race with a time of five hours, 59 minutes and 54 seconds, but the Dimension Data cyclist was adjudged to have pipped his rival at the death.

Cavendish's record of 28 stage wins draws him level with Frenchman Bernard Hinault's tally in the all-time hall of fame. Only 34-time stage winner Eddy Merckx of Belgium has achieved more.

Peter Sagan retained the race lead during the third stage of this year's Tour de France in Angers, while reigning champion Chris Froome finished in the peloton to move up to fourth overall.
