Geraint Thomas finishes fourth in the third stage of the Tour Down Under to hold a five-second lead midway through the race.

Geraint Thomas has retained his lead in the Tour Down Under following Tom Jelte Slagter's victory in the third stage of the race.

Team Sky's Thomas recorded another impressive display to finish fourth in the 139km stage to keep the Ochre jersey.

Slagter of Blanco Cycling produced a stunning last 1000m to storm away from the peloton and move within five seconds of Thomas in the process.

Matthew Goss and Philippe Gilbert beat Thomas to a place on the podium in difficult conditions as temperatures reached 38 degrees Celsius.

Spain's Javier Moreno is in third place overall ahead of Friday's fourth stage.
