New Zealand take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series against Sri Lanka by taking the first one-day international by three runs.

New Zealand have taken a 1-0 lead in the two-match one-day international series against Sri Lanka by winning the first contest by three runs in Mount Maunganui

After the hosts went into bat first, Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson soared to century opening stand with both reaching 50.

Guptill (58) was the first to go as he was run out by Chamara Kapugedera and Williamson (53) later followed off the bowling of Nuwan Kulasekara.

Colin Munro contributed 36 runs before he was sent packing, but it was Sri Lanka's bowlers who took control in the final five overs as New Zealand ended the innings on 182-4.

In reply, Sri Lanka suffered early blows when Tillakaratne Dilshan (0), Dinesh Chandimal (7), Shehan Jayasuriya (4) and Angelo Mathews (4) were all taken out inside the first five overs of the innings.

Trent Boult and Matt Henry impressed with the ball as they took three wickets apiece, restricting Sri Lanka to 179-9.

Opener Danushka Gunathilaka top-scored with 46 runs off 29 balls, while Milinda Siriwardana was not far behind with 42 off 31 deliveries.
