Terrell Gausha scores late knockout over Andranik Hakobyan

A late stoppage gives American middleweight Terrell Gausha a ticket into the next round at the expense of Armenia's Andranik Hakobyan.

American middleweight Terrell Gausha has scored a dramatic late knockout victory over Armenia's Andranik Hakobyan.

Gausha looked to make a fast start from the opening bell, but could not get near the Armenian in the early exchanges.

However, that soon changed as the American landed a rapid combination that looked to momentarily stun Hakobyan.

Despite Gausha's late flurry, the judges scored the first round 4-3 to Hakobyan.

Gausha looked to rectify that in the second, and two stinging shots wobbled the bigger Armenian early in the second.

A left hook to the body slowed Hakobyan down to a virtual stand-still, but perhaps showed a bit of naivity by fully taking advantage of the situation.

As the combatants entered the final round, Gausha was still trailing by one point.

The final three minutes started in ferocious fashion as the pair stood toe to toe and traded shots from the centre of the ring.

As the clock ticked down, it looked as though Hakobyan would hang on, but Gausha launched one final attack with just a second remaining.

Hakobyan hit the canvas, but managed to climb to his feet up despite clearly being shaken.

Once the contest had resumed, Gausha put everything behind a left hook to send the Armenian crashing to the deck once more.

There was confusion as no-one knew if the referee has called the bout off, or if the clock had expired.

As it turned out, the referee did not believe that Hakobyan was fit to continue and Gausha scored a dramatic late victory.
